‘Christ in the Marketplace' Series:

Recommended Reference + Further Teaching Material

The following is a review of material published by, or distributed through the ‘London Institute for Contemporary Christianity' (LICC). From what we have read + reviewed (or received recommendation from other trusted sources), this material appears to be excellent. The organisation was founded by John Stott in 1982 with the aim to "equip Christians to make a radical difference for Christ in the contemporary world - in their workplaces, neighbourhoods, schools and colleges." Their belief is "that every part of our lives comes under the Lordship of Christ, and that all of life is a context for worship, mission, ministry and active Christian engagement twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week". The majority of the LICC publications are now predominantly produced by their Executive Director, Mark Greene. Mark originally worked for 10 years with ‘Ogilvy & Mather' (a New York based International advertising, marketing and public relations agency) prior to serving at London School of Theology (previously LBC) as their Vice-Principal and Lecturer in Communications.

LICC Publications of specific interest being: ‘Imagine - How We Can Reach the UK' (for anyone and everyone), ‘Rebuilding Trust in Business: Enron and Beyond' (perhaps aimed more at those in more management positions) and ‘Supporting Christians at Work' (aimed at those in leadership).

Adrian is currently reviewing the London School of Theology's ‘Christian Life and Work' DVD set - "This six part DVD resource and step by step leader's guide will help small groups to: Know the joy of working for God from "9-5", Make a difference for God in your workplace, Support each other effectively at work, Raise the profile of secular work in your church." Keep an eye on the web-site, for further reviews...

Thank God it's Monday - Ministry in the Workplace', by Mark Greene - "The third edition of this highly influential contemporary classic features an updated resource section and a new chapter on integrating life and work, helping us see how our work life, as well as our weekend life, can be lived fruitfully for God." This appears to be excellent material, and there have been many great reviews on this book - see the LICC web-site for more.

Your Work Matters to God', by Doug Sherman and William Hendricks - "You spend a big chunk of your life at work. Find out how God views what you do on the job. Your Work Matters to God demonstrates biblically just how important secular work really is to God. You'll be challenged to develop a lifestyle so striking and true, the people you work with will be eager to let you talk about what makes you different." This book looks particularly relevant to those who struggle to see their daily jobs as either that of serving God, or as an opportunity to show Christ in that environment.

Another book which comes with a great reputation is, ‘Anointed for Business', by Ed Silvoso - "Silvoso's inspiring book shows why it's time to break down the wall between labor and religious service, and view labor as worship, just as God intended. Only then can we extend God's kingdom to every corner of our world."  See Ed's website for a 49 page free-to-download extract.

Adrian has also purchased a copy of ‘Transformation' (the recent sequel to ‘Anointed for Business'), by Ed Silvoso. Here Ed believes that we can "change the marketplace, change the world". See Ed's website for a ‘praise-filled' review of this new book.
